We Didn't Start the Fire

[Feel free to forward/post this anywhere.]

New York City is a story of beauty and tragedy. This past week the
infamous "House of Yes" went up in flames. I wish this were some cute
metaphor but this is a message about an actual tragedy and a call for
support.

For the few of you that don't know, the House of Yes was home to
several of the most amazing talents of our moment. It was also a
community center for all of us who fit nowhere else. Since its
conception last May, it hosted decadent dance parties, hip-hop throw
downs, Burlesque birthdays, recording sessions, sing-alongs, circus
rehearsals, decoration creation, costume workshops, family brunches,
and that essential conversation that makes New York City the place we
were all destined to live in.

Fire at its best is a phenomenon of incredible beauty. Fire at its
worst creates tragedy that is hard to believe until experienced. This
weekend you have a chance to decide the end of this story. This is
when something beautiful comes rising from the flames.

This Saturday, May 3rd you are invited to:

We Didn't Start the Fire
(it was always burning)
A Yes Benefit

Details: http://www.ladycircus.com/fire.html

Featuring Upstairs in the Cabaret Loft:

Circus Stunts from all of the Lady Circus
You've seen their stilt stunts and aerial acts at street parties, loft
throw downs and in the pages of the local press. The House of Yes was
their home and this is who you are helping to find the next great
space to restart in. They've given you heart and soul and now you can
give a little back.

Tune-yards
Tune-yards is tenor uke, looping pedal, percussion on varied objects,
and GUTS. Merrill plays with the Montreal band Sister Suvi and is a
trained puppeteer.

Sxip Shirey and Adam Matta
International circus and theater composer Sxip Shirey creates unique
soundscapes utilizing mutant harmonicas. He is accompanied by the
sound of turntables, horns, percussion, bass and sundry sound effects
provided by amazing human beatboxer Adam Matta on the mic.

Feloche
Alt-electro-cajun music with a french urban bayou flavour. Featuring
member of the mythic soviet punk-rock band "VV" (Vopli Vidopliassova),
Feloche is emerging out of the parisian swamps with a howlin' bayou
moody gris-gris sound.

Secret Special Guest
We can't tell you who they are, but here's what the press has to say:
"This is a band that should be taken seriously, even while singing
about homemade sex tapes and the Chinatown bus" - Gothamist; "a
shocking, dynamic, danceable and hilarious affair" - Billboard
Magazine; "irresistibly danceable and always brings the party" - Cool
Hunting.

Fanfare Samenakoa
>From Marseille, France, Fanfare Samenakoa interprets the street music
of France's oldest city in an fresh, original and amusing way, with
lots of brass, drums and shouts of joy.

DJ Joro Boro:
Much loved Bulgarian Bar resident spinning his EthnoMesh Megalophonia mix

DJ Dhundee:
Dhundee is known for his eclectic, jazz-fueled, soulful DJ sets and
extensive music collection, including broken beat, down-tempo,
afrobeat, dub, latin, funk, house, hiphop, and soul.

DJ Ts:
An eclectic mix flowing early Italian lounge into Ramellzee, Connie
Francis into Johny Cash into Nurse With Wound

Downstairs in the Dance 'till you Strip room:
An eclectic mix in this classically less-than-classy New York City
institution. Be ready to sweat to beats, breaks and amazing mixes by:
DJ Kimyon the infamous techno aficionado; $mall Change digging in the
crates inspiring you to dance until you break;
Zemi17 the world-infused music creator and D_Juice starting you on
your way down the rabbit hole.

Of course, there's more:
The Lady Aye, on-stage, she's a fire eater, sword swallower, and
emcee; off-stage she's a noted burlesque producer and writer. Named an
"up and coming burlesque babe" by the Village Voice Best of 2006.
Jellyboy the Clown the living cartoon is a trickster who risks death
to entertain. Spontaneous performances by Modern Dance Awareness
Society, visuals by Mojo, Silent Art Auction, live silk screen by
Peripheral Media Projects and Carl Saytor's Mega-Photobooth.

This Saturday, May 3rd : 8pm-5am
Arrive before 10pm for special performances and art auction.

@ Pussycat Lounge
96 Greenwich St (at Rector)
Manhattan, NY
(R,W,1 to Rector)

$20 Donation/Admission - Strictly 21+
(Every penny goes to the victims of the fire, every performer and
organizer is donating their time and energy to make this happen. Even
the bar is donating a portion of their profits to the rebuilding of Yes.)

Over the past years we've participated in events that we've thrown our
soul into and others that were frivolous distractions at best. This
tragedy has brought together the best of our community in a way that
reminds you of the beauty and possibility within this city. Not only
will this party be the most fun to be had on a Saturday night, it's a
real reason to be out, to pay a cover and to kiss the cutest person
you can find. On this night we remember the beauty of community as we
rise from the flames.
